It's a length of pipe or conduit that has been tamed, domesticated and kept
as a pet. You can hardly go through your life shouting "OI! Conduit! Stop
that!" so you give it the sort of name you wouldn't be ashamed to shout from
the back door at 2am. I have a 3 foot section of 4 inch sewer pipe called
Gerald at home.

What is a named pipe? I think that I've wrongly assumed that
\\server\share is a named pipe. Can someone tell me what it is before I
embarrass myself at a SQL Server party? ;]

Thanks,

Ray at work
