Most newer switched autosense whether a port needs to be crossover or not. Try it! I can use a crossover cable and just plug it into one of the >ports, and that will be as good as having an uplink port. True. If the 16 port switch has an uplink port you could also use a straight cable from there to port 1 on the 5 port switch. >I'd just go try it and see, but a) I'm still at work, and b) I own zero >crossover cables. EASY RULE: Any time you are connecting two network devices there must be at least one crossover (and an odd number if there are more than one). A crossover is any time you switch from a T568B pinout to a T568A pinout. Standard network cable terminations (in most installations) and switch ports are T568B Most NICs are T568A So to connect Port 1 (T568B) on a switch to Port 1 (T568B) on another switch you need a cable that is a crossover T568B on one end and T568A on the other. To connect the Uplink Port (T568A) on a switch to Port 1 (T568B) on another swith you need a straight cable T568B on both ends. To connect a NIC (T568A) to Port 1 (T568B) on a switch you need a straight cable T568B on both ends. To connect a NIC (T568A) to the Uplink Port (T568A) on a switch you need a crossover cable T568B on one end and T568A on the other To connect a NIC (T568A) directly to another NIC (T568A) you need a crossover cable T568B on one end and T568A on the other (Now that's a small LAN) Chris Berry compjma@xxxxxxxxxxx Systems Administrator JM Associates "Ok, so the servers are down, the lights are out, and all I have to work with is a roll of duct tape, a ball point pen, a lighter, and a twenty year old copy of emacs.
