Construction Complete for Phase II At Hannah's Hope! Lunch Time at Hannah's Hope 5-18-10 An update on our projects is long overdue! We last reported to you in January that two new classrooms at Hannah's Hope were being constructed. Well, how do they look? I think you will agree that they are quite attractive. The new classrooms are housing 1st graders and there is enough space for next year's second grade class. Two New Classrooms at Hannah's Hope Digging of the well continues.. The good news is that the rains have been quite extensive this spring. Unfortunately, that has significantly delayed the completion of the well being dug (by hand!) at Hannah's Hope. We are at 85 feet and continue to dig until we hit water. Check out the photo. Yes.that's a fundi (worker) at the bottom! We hope to hit water soon. Well Under Construction- That's a worker at the bottom! Usambara Girls' School Last year Joining Hearts and Hands constructed a three-classroom block for the Form 2 high school girls at Usambara Girls School in Korogwe, Tanzania. We are pleased to inform you that construction is well underway on the next three-classroom block for next year's Form 2 girls. Construction should be complete in the next 6 to 8 weeks. Form 2 Built by JH & H Form 3 Classrooms under Construction Scientific Equipment from VWR Scientific Arrives at Usambara Girls School VWR Scientific recently sent a container of scientific equipment and materials to Usambara Girls School. VWR is the international company that consists of Sargent Welch, Ward's Natural Science and Science Kit. The science lab is under construction and this generous donation will be a tremendous help. Without VWR, the science program at Usambara Girls School would be incomplete and inadequate. Thanks to all at VWR for their kind hearts. Please visit them at: https://www.vwrsp.com/ The Sisters of Usambara with the Amazing Quantity and Quality VWR Equipment Goat Breeding Project is a Model of Sustainability. Two years ago we started a dairy goat project in Butere, Kenya. Joining Hearts and Hands provided training for 70 community members and start-up funds to begin a business that breeds goats and produces milk and manure to sell at market. We began with two breeding centers. Since that time, the group has become totally independent. They have expanded to 4 breeding centers and have become a model for Western and Nyanza provinces. They have provided the incentive to a group of community members in Katito, (Where Hannah's Hope is located) to begin two breeding centers and a dairy project. The group below traveled to Western to visit our successful program in Butere. The Katito group is called FFAKAPA which means the Friends of St. Francis of Assisi, Katito Parish. They are beginning their training in business and goat breeding this week. Bill and Joanne with FFAKAPA New Community Outreach Joining Hearts and Hands is reaching out to the Homa Bay Community. The Sisters of Notre Dame have set up a new community outreach in Homa Bay, which is about an hour south of Hannah's Hope. The sisters are working with disadvantaged families and children. Joining Hearts and Hands is providing 8 high school scholarships to orphans of this community and will be working with a self-help group to create a micro-business for sustainability. Joanne and Bill with the Sisters from Homa Bay First Scholarship Students Graduate Below is our first group of graduating seniors. We are so proud of them. Without you they would never have had the opportunity to ever see the inside of a high school classroom. JH & H's First Graduating Seniors! Bella Bead Jewelry Linda Lawrence is an extremely gifted local artist. You can find here jewelry at Parkleigh on Park Avenue and at many upcoming shows. Linda and her husband Peter have been faithful patrons of JH & H. Last year Linda designed a special Heart pendant for Hannah's Hope. She raised nearly $1000. This year, again, Linda is producing a special heart to help the cause. Purchase a specially priced Glass Heart during June and all proceeds are donated in Hannah's name to Joining Hearts and Hands. What a great gift for a special friend (or for yourself!) Bella Bead heart would make. Here is the link! http://www.lindasbellabeads.com/shows_events.htm Many thanks to all who have been so generous during these difficult financial times. Imagine how the people of the third world and developing countries have suffered during this economic downturn. But, there are signs of hope! Thanks for all you do for the children of Africa!
