I'll be interested to hear other opinions, I'm still under the impression
that it helps to have your metatags, title, image tags and page text
congruent and term repetitive. Yes, it increasing your position to have
other people link to your site. Yes, it increases your position even more
to pay for positioning.
Putting that aside for the moment. You should still use image tags because
there are still some people that turn off graphics and an image tag allows
them to see what content the graphic would have conveyed. Also screen
readers for the visually handicapped use image tags to "see" the graphic.
If you're in the USA and you receive federal/some state funds, you must be
Section 508 compliant. Part of that compliancy includes the requirement for
image tags for screen readers.
