Think of the search engine industry as a race, much like other industries,
although referred to as a war. Since the beginning of search engines,
players have come and gone, risen and fallen... the number of players has
also fluctuated. Yes, today Google is the leader of the pack, and managed
to dominate the industry. But, don't be fooled -- they are not invincible.
In fact, they are showing other companies what can be done. They are
trailblazers, opening minds to possibilities, and showing the way to
corporate profits. Yes, know that Google is the leader right now, with a
market share that dwarfs all other search engines combined, but don't get
tunnel vision. Keep abreast of search engine news on any of the many
proliferating lists, and even by subscribing to google's news alerts for
"search engine" -- you'll get an email with the latest news about google and
every other player, as well as editorial about search aggregated from
"qualified" news sites.
