given the limited info we have, the quotes mentioned are not
unrealistic.
if we have the entire story - the political landscape, the
organizational goals for the web site, etc. we can tailor our
response differently.
all we heard was 20 static html pages and the company wants to
line items what it would cost to get them built.
i'll concede that it could be a recipe for disaster and/or scope
creep but without hearing any additional information, the
response that i and others have given are reasonable.
plain fact that i'll repeat. a lot of small to medium size
companies don't want to shell out the dough for a professionally
done web site regardless of the virtues that approach has and
often, no amount of impassioned arguements is going to change
that.
and please don't say i'm irresponsible. based on what i heard, i
gave a reasonable answer. one can certainly build a web site for
that and it won't necessarily be cheesy.
if the person doesn't like the answer, maybe he/she should go
back to their manager and re-assess what the web site is to do
so we can have more specific and complete project parameters and
approach the question differently.
p.s. it begs the question...why is the guy running the dept if
he can't do the work himself? my company is getting at least
$50K of web work out of me but i'm salaried and actually know
how to do it.
