Whoever's just sending out wild guess quotes may want to reread the email
VERY carefully. I'd quote this client high because I don't think they have
any idea what they want the site to do, or presentation, or their audience.
I can almost guarantee this development's gonna creep big time.
Site designer will be doing all graphics ("may be some in-house design"
isn't the same as "there will be in-house design") and probably rewriting
all content.
20 pages. Why 20 pages? 20 pages of what? So far, this "feels" like a 5
page site. I'd be more comfortable if they said "We need to explain how
our product works, have a place where we can post FAQs, a way for people to
contact us with questions, and we want to be able to offer emailed
newsletters and different discussion groups to support our clients." I'd be
very uncomfortable if they said something like "we want the first page to
tell how grandpa started the company" or they want "About Us" as the first
navigation link.
Creative product. Big oh-oh to me. It's been my experience that creative
companies with creative products are VERY difficult to please. They have
small budgets and really big ideas. Nothing wrong with that but it needs to
understood up front. It seems that those types of sites have little focus
on the client's client so the site fails. Too many times developers please
their client and forget that the focus of the site is the client's client.
Plus, my experience only, it seems that "creative" sites are desired by
companies that are very social decision makers. This means you'd better put
time into the budget to "attend", online or off line, numerous client
committees at long meetings.
How does this client know if their site is a success? How will the
developer be judged? By who, when, how?
Who will be maintaining the site? How?
Those are just some of the questions. Actually, that may be the answer to
"what type of ...", the type that you're looking for is someone who asks a
lot more questions when presented with an opportunity described this way.
Not me, but someone.

Subject: [webproducers] cost to create a website?
Hi All.
A friend of mine needs to create a departmental budget for his company,
and
he wanted to know (ballpark estimate) how much it would cost for a basic
website. HTML, no more than 20 pages of content. The budget would need
to
cover somebody who could do the site structure, some design, and all the
coding. There may be some in-house design resources available, but the
project person would need to have enough of a creative background to
design
something that reflects the company's "creative-y" product.
What would a ballpark budget number be? What type of
person/title/experience should he be looking for if he decides to hire?
Of
course if the project happens I'll post details to the list.
Thanks!
