I appreciate your question and understand the interest in curbing the volume
of e-mail you get. I want to address your concerns to the entire list in
case others have the same concern and because it also brings up the bigger
issue of the purpose of a discussion list.
One way to address the issue that seems to work on other lists is for
posters to request to be mailed off-list and usually most respondents will
comply but some, myself included forget and just hit reply accidentally.
Another way to handle an influx of incoming e-mail is user selected options:
- Mail Filtering is one option that works well for many of our subscribers.
I know many people who subscribe to numerous lists and if all the e-mail
from all the lists came into one inbox it certainly would be a big pain. I
personally have my mail filtered for different lists and I read them at my
leisure and just ignore the folders of messages until I can. I also scan the
subjects to see if anything is of relevance to me.
- Digest Mode- The Web Producers List is available in digest mode and you
can change your subscription preferences for digest mode (on or off)at
www.webproducers.org. As an organization with no income and no paid staff we
have to use automated tools like digest mode in lieu of professional
administrators who would be able to sift through e-mail's and re-send to
those who responded.
As this is a discussion list with hundreds of subscribers there will always
be a range of topics that some are interested in while others are not.
Unfortunately we don't have a way to know which topics individuals are
interested in and we are conscious of the fact that topics change often. We
encourage message posters to use informative subject lines to make it easier
to "scan and skip".
Additionally, since we are a discussion list we want to encourage discussion
and if we all replies are always off list then we wouldn't be a discussion
list at all and it would change the dynamic and purpose of the list and
besides then you would get a flood of messages posted to the list asking
"what did you find out" please e-mail me off list. So it would be a list of
questions but no answers.
We also have an archive of messages and this makes it easy to access the
knowledge base of the community.
I hope these answers and suggestions were helpful to you.
Thanks,
Morry

Morry:
When a member of the group asks a question of the group, is there any way
that respondents can limit their response to the specific individual who
asked the question vs. copying the entire list?
I'm sure I'm not alone in that when I am not interested in the responses,
it's annoying to have to go through my inbox and delete unsolicited mail.
Perhaps respondents can send their replies to the list administrator who
will capture and post all replies in one email so that those who are
interested, including the person who asked the question, can open one email
and be done with it?
Thanks,
Catherine
