Our app was an initial foray into the Social Media wild, so to speak, for
Samsung. It was a simple Vampires/Werewolves-type game implemented in
Ruby/RoR and like any execution thrown into the wild, had its positive and
negative implications. Lucky for us, most were positive. You can see it here
http://apps.facebook.com/antfightclub.
Since then our developers at Digitas have created several games for facebook
(non-RoR), on their own, as well as, for another client-with more in the
pipeline. The developers have commented on how it brings fun back into
development and enjoyed the feedback from the community.
From the client's perspective, the FB App was a small part of an integrated
digital campaign which consisted of a Flash mash-up, TVC, Viral, Buzz,
Social Media and Flash-talking rich media banner executions for the launch
of a Global HHP Campaign that hit several countries in the EU-where we also
delivered offline street-team-type promos, as well. FB App alone-not unless
your business is putting out apps.
As the developer, you hook into FBs Social Graph and never obtain
information about the User though you are able to keep information the User
opt to give to the game. The game exposes engagement with other FB Users
only what is already possible. As for OpenSocial, I like it in concept and
there a many "known" developers onboard and creating for this platform, but
FB wasn't invited to the "Social". I enjoyed the apps highlighted on
Google's Campfire video-it's a recommended view...it does show a lot of
promise.
The thing to keep top of mind is performance (do your testing) and does the
app live beyond the campaign...
Hope this helps,
-Herve

I'm hearing a few reasons for building them. Some is just PR, to say =20
they did it and to see what happens.
Generally this is coupled with a realization that some of their market =20
(or much of their market) is on facebook so it's a good place to reach =20
out to them. From the agency perspective just putting ads up there =20
seems like not taking advantage of the potential for the channel, so =20
an engaging app may be a better place/way to resonate with the =20
audience. Much of it is brand building - some of it is the potential =20
for DM, tracking and engagement.
For the record, the research one of the media agencies did for me very =20
strongly states that apps that take advantage of FB's suite of =20
services and that keep things simple and use the news feed a a way to =20
broadcast are much much more successful than anything that resembles a =20
complicated application or game type dynamic. In other words (keep it =20
simple, stupid and use the protocols that people have become used to =20
and have a proven success rate.
