Startup.com is now out on DVD:

For those of you who may have missed it, Starup.com is THE documentary about
Silicon Alley. This
little gem is now out on DVD, so anyone lacking a yearbook from their dot.com
days can now relive
the high (and low) points of working in the web industry. The film follows the
rise and fall of
govworks.com, a typical internet startup in New York City.
If you work as a project manager you should watch this film very closely as it
has a number of
classic software mistakes. While it doesn't suggest solutions to these
mistakes, it does show
textbook examples of:
- Why the sales and production teams need to see eye to eye on basic program
goals.
- How throwing money at a project doesn't make it any better.
- The need for on-going quality assurance during the entire project cycle.
- Why dynamic website production is really software production.
- Don't allow the competition visit your shop!
You can almost use scenes from this film to train your upper management,
investors, clients and
staff on how not to run a software project. Of course the main sins in this
film are youth and a
lack of experience, but there are some deeper lessons for all of us.
