Lee,
Most of my clients want a ballpark figure before we nail down the specifics
of the project. Often times before we meet.
I don't usually provide a dollar amount until it is clear what the project
involves. Therefore, I submit a proposal but without a price attached. If
the client agrees to the details of the project (that is to say their wish
list) then I will come back with a dollar amount and a time frame.
Sometimes I even work with the client to first break their wish list into
what they need, want, and hope for. In turn, this breaks the project into
smaller phases that I can be priced accordingly.
Because I'm running solo, I can afford to spend extra time consulting for
less -- I hope that the extra customer service will result in referrals.
Thinking out loud...
Is it possible to respond to the RFP asking for the additional information
you need to "Fill in the blanks."
In your response to the RFP, can the project cost be a range (i.e. $10-$20).
Hope this helps...
Evan
