[webproducers] Re: Off Shore Labor Issues

I applaud Lydia for this response to Andrey. I have also been
highly insulted at his blatant self promotion on this and other
lists, for the same reasons. You have got a LOT of nerve and much
disrespect, pal... that's all I can say!=20

As someone who has worked virtually with companies all over the
world, I do know that it is possible (but not easy) to work that
way - and the face to face time is not a requirement necessarily,
to do good quality, and responsible work. However, I will not
contribute to the demise of this country and its economy by
sending my work outside - I currently work with programmers in
this country - granted they charge less than they used to, but it
gives me great comfort to know that I am helping the economy of
my own state or country.=20

I lost most of my clients when 9/11 and the economy slid out of
wack. They were primarily in NYC and other major cities. With
hundreds upon thousands of people "like me" out of work, the few
clients that even managed to stay in business started outsourcing
to local people, because there was no reason to go clear across
the country to save some bucks. I still know hundreds of really
talented folks who are out of work, or working at Targets or
Walmarts - some of the best web people I ever have come across.
And that saddens me. The thing is, I am often critical of this
countries policy, especially in the last few years - but I am
still an American and bright enough know that we are in a very
dangerous time right now, as a nation. I am not, for any reason,
going to send the work I have out of here, for my own economic
reasons - because it is selfish and short sighted as an American.
If do that, and contribute to what is already happening, and the
depression we're in continues, it will have further reaching
implications than I dare to imagine.=20

As a side note - back when things were wonderful, I did outsource
overseas, a few times. Once to Germany, another time to
Indonesia. I paid very close to what those people would have
gotten in the US at the time, of my own free will and made two
talented people very, very happy. I am not out to screw anyone -
its not good for the karma bank. For the record, in both cases,
the experiment was a failure - and I stopped doing it. I also
managed a team with all its programmers in Krakow for a year, but
their lead programmer came to the US to meet with me 5 times. I
have a hard enough time getting developers who are reliable and
responsible and high quality to do what they are told in English
and in this country, without adding to my anxiety.=20
