[webproducers] Re: Need advice...

Ya, the job market out there is pretty dry, and
analysts say this tech downturn will continue until
this time next year.

Here're my two cents:

-- send out tons of resumes. Good places to look: New
York Times website, Hotjobs, Monster.com, Media
Bistro, Craigslist, and a few others.

-- if you want to stay in the position of
Producer/Project Manager, DEFINITELY take MSProject
2000 classes and learn MS Visio. To be honest, I've
seen too many so-called Project Managers try to get by
without learning it (or similar application). A
project manager without MSProject is like a designer
without Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop. You can do it,
but you have to wonder why a professional designer
doesn't know how to use it.

-- don't go from producer to exec admin in the web
environment. If you're going to do it, find another
industry to do it in (preferably one you're interested
in). You might undo your climb to the PM/Producer
position you have

-- If you can speak other languages, go international.
If you can't -- still try. Japanese firms are about
1 1/2-2 years behind where we are. They've just
started building an online presence and have a
surprising amount of money they don't know what to do
with (although they're a little more canny about the
web then we were)

-- if you're unemployed, use the time to build an
ambitious website as if it were a professional job.
Sounds corny and a little like busy work, but I've
learned as much from building my own sites and sites
for/with friends than my job experience (which is
lengthy). It also forces you to become fluent in
coding and design.

-- Build an online portfolio, complete with
screenshots and description

As for Vancouver, I don't know about the work
environment, but I have relatives there, and it's
really nice. I wouldn't mind living there for awhile,
when I get tired of life in the big city.

It's not too encouraging, but it may help in the
little ways and maybe a few big ones.
