I think the issue is contributing to the local economy. If your dollars go
to someone locally, they spend it locally, and local people benefit- and
everyone near you is better off, including you.

Send all your money elsewhere- and if everyone else does, too- the local
environment gets poorer. People stop sweeping the sidewalk and start
breaking car windows for the radios inside.

Take a drive through any of the Midwest's former industrial towns for a case
study of what happens when ALL the work is sent offshore. I grew up in New
York City, in a supposed "rough" part of town, but I'd be afraid to get out
of the car in most parts of Gary, Indiana.

Luckily, I believe we're a long way from information workers being
completely outsourced. As an art director for a Very Large ISP that produces
culturally relevant content, I need to live, breathe, and eat the culture
every day. If I got a call from a Very Large ISP in Bangalore asking me to
produce movie sites for local consumption, I think I'd be at a disadvantage
in comparison to local talent...
