[webproducers] Re: Job: Web Producer-San Jose, San Luis Obispo or San Clemente, CA

today was fairly typical.

this morning i was coding (php/css) a site for a documentary a client
is releasing.

this afternoon i was coordinating shooters for a documentary that
we're producing

and right now i'm wireframing our corporate site and writing up
software/marketing copy for it.

tomorrow i'll be working with one of our video editors on a series
she's producing, and then scoring a soundtrack for a video piece we've
been commissioned for.

i don't know what the title is but i think macgyver should be in there
somewhere.

that's why i always have a hard time when people ask what they should
study/do to get into the online world. i think the answer can be
either go really deep in one or a few selected areas, or go really
broad across many.

for example, i teach at the columbia j-school and i try to steer my
students away from trying to become coders (they typically want to
learn flash). i instead try to teach them how to understand the
technologies and their opportunities and possibilities so that they,
as content producers, can then have intelligent conversations with
people who are spending as much time learning to code as they are
learning how to become journalists on how to produce multimedia
packages.
