Yay FSU in the spotlight! That's my school :)
I agree. Learming how to conduct information interviews is crucial. I've
learned my lesson

Strongly encourage him to learn about and conduct information
interviews!
Read more about information interviews:

Maybe we should create a network of WPO members that would offer to
mentor new entrants to the field and do info. interviews etc.
I'd also suggest he check out the career services of his college
because they are usually have great general career planning resources
and advice. I teach at two universities and I'm always amazed at how
many students don't take advantage of those resources. I still would
want to get connected with people in the filed and wouldn't rely on
the career services folks for specific info. on our field but that's
why you do an info. interview. The career offices can be great for
career coaching, getting your resume in order, connecting you with
alum in the field, teaching how to negotiate salary or benefits etc.
and most offer services not only for recent grads but also alum of the
school.
