[webproducers] Re: Getting started in "the biz". Suggestions?

Hi Nathan,
The first two resources that I would send him to are the WPO mailing list and
Smashing Magazine.  WPO is great because of its focus on the producer/project
manager role, and Smashing Magazine is a great comprehensive resource for
keeping up with the latest trends and best practices on the design and
development ends.  Those two will provide him with the fundamental information
needed to be a producer.

Next, I would suggest that he think about what kinds of websites he wants to
produce, i.e. what does he love to do?  If he loves gaming, I would look up the
sites of his favorite games, and see if you can find out what company designed
those sites.  Producing websites for clients that you're not really interested
in can be like jumping on a bike with no seat: slightly amusing but mostly
painful.  We only get so many trips around the sun, so you may as well spend
that time doing something you love to do.

The best way to learn something is by doing it, so I would also have him do his
own blog, portfolio site, etc. so he can get his hands dirty.

From there, I think there are all kinds of directions he can go (the nature of
being a producer), and it would depend on what specific skill he wants to delve
into:

The FWA.com - Design Trends
Lynda.com - Software Training
WebmasterWorld.com - SEO & Webmaster Issues
BoxesAndArrows.com - IA/UI Design

Cheers,
Matt

Hey All,
A friend¹s little bro just graduated from school and is very interested in
pursuing a career as Producer on the Digital side.
While I have plenty of insight, contacts and resources for him I¹m positive
there¹s something out there I¹m not aware.  Does anyone have any suggestions
for sites, blogs, etc. that I could reference him to?  Mostly I¹d love for
him to learn the (ever changing) fundamentals of the digital space, get the
latest trends, news and learn how to ³talk shop².

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Nathan
