Evan,
Have a look at this URL:
http://www.opensourcecms.com/
It will allow you to test-drive many open-source CMS systems w/o having
to install them. Some are easier to use than others and the
content-entry portion of some of them may not be cross-browser
compatible (many are still Windows IE-only).
Nevertheless, the above URL will give you an idea of what different
CMSs can do, how easy they're to set up, etc. Each one will have
different learning curves, requirements, etc.
Also, not all will be virtual host "friendly" in terms of set up or
even performance so all the more reason to evaluate the different
options.
Of course, if the client's needs are REALLY modest, then you can also
look at http://www.cmsimple.dk/
It's a PHP-based CMS with very rudimentary functionality but it does
work nicely and it's fast, even on virtual hosts because it isn't
dynamic - you edit a single html file. I've used it for simple things
and it works fine cross-browser, at least with Mozilla.
