Sep 30: Deadline for WITA Evaluator Applications
Call for WITA Evaluators
The Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH) is seeking qualified
candidates to be trained as evaluators for the Wisconsin Interpreting
and Transliterating Assessment (WITA).
Who: ODHH is looking to fill 20 evaluator slots. 10 deaf and 10
hearing evaluators are needed.
Hours: Evaluators will receive videotapes via US Mail periodically
during the year. The video tape must be evaluated and returned to ODHH
with the evaluation completed within 2 weeks of receiving the video. One
video could have multiple applicants on it to be evaluated. Evaluation
of 1 applicant could take 1-2 hours depending on the experience of the
evaluator.
Compensation: Evaluators will be paid $30.00 per applicant evaluated.
Qualifications:
Deaf candidates must have bilingual competence in both ASL and English
and at least one of the following:
CDI (Certified Deaf Interpreter – Registry of interpreters for the Deaf)
ASLTA
Bachelor’s Degree
Hearing Candidates must have bilingual competence in both ASL and
English as well as:
CI and CT, CSC, or NIC-Certified
ITP Graduate
Job Description: Evaluators will be responsible to attend orientation
training and subsequent refresher trainings. Upon completion of the
orientation training evaluators will begin receiving video tapes in the
mail at their home with multiple applicants on it. All evaluators must
have access to a TV and VCR and in future, internet, to be able to view
the video tapes. Using established tools and scoring rubrics evaluators
will view and score the applicant on the video. The video along with
scoring documentation must be returned to the ODHH office promptly.
This must be done in a timely fashion so that the WITA system runs
smoothly and efficiently. Evaluators must be very responsible and have
good time management skills. In addition, evaluators must adhere to a
high degree of confidentiality.
Application: Interested persons must apply by submitting a letter of
interest to ODHH. The letter should indicate why they are interested in
becoming a WITA evaluator and what qualification they have which satisfy
the required qualifications. Please include a copy of any of the
qualifications with the letter (ex. RID card, ASLTA, Bachelor’s Degree,
ITP certificate).
Required orientation training will take place on Saturday November 3,
9:00 am – 5:00 pm in Greenfield.

ASL Instructor at UVA
The American Sign Language Program at the University of Virginia seeks a
full-time visiting lecturer to begin in August of 2007. This is a
one-year position for the 2007-08 academic year. Responsibilities will
include teaching three ASL classes per semester and contributing to
curriculum design, development of teaching materials, and the overall
growth of a rigorous, innovative ASL Program. The lecturer will also
help supervise drill instructors. Salary commensurate with educational
and professional experience. The position comes with an attractive

Advanced or native ASL skills; MA in Teaching ASL as a Foreign Language,

Provides some interpreting under supervision of a Qualified Mental
Health Interpreter (QMHI).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of signing systems
and dialects pertinent to regions and ethnicity in Alabama and other
southeastern states. Knowledge of methodology in teaching and tutoring
American Sign Language (ASL). A general knowledge of deaf cultural
groups in the United States and of identity levels (deaf world, hearing
majority, and marginality) . Knowledge of state-of-the-art communication
methods. Knowledge of nonverbal and augmentive communication strategies.
Ability to assess signed communication, particularly to differentiate
idiosyncratic from abnormal expressions. Ability to communicate

wadnetpost-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'subscribe' in the Subject field.
IF YOU ARE CHANGING EMAIL ADDRESSES, PLEASE FOLLOW THESE TWO STEPS:
1) UNSUBSCRIBE from the WADNet Post by sending an email from your OLD email address to wadnetpost-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field.
Then
2) SUBSCRIBE to the WADNet Post by sending an email from your NEW email address
to wadnetpost-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'subscribe' in the Subject field.
TO SUBMIT ARTICLES for WADNet Posts, send an email with the information to
wadneteditor@xxxxxxxxxxx by 7pm CST Sunday night. WADNet Posts generally go
out on Monday and/or Tuesday evenings each week. Special Postings will be made
when there is an urgent need and on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the
WADNet Post Editor if you have any questions.
TO RECEIVE WADNET POST IN DIGEST MODE:
To start receiving WADNet Posts in digest mode, simply send an email to wadnetpost-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "set digest" in the subject line. Leave the body of the email blank. You should get a confirmation saying "set digest" and "Flag successfully set". After that, you will start receiving WADNet Post in digest instead of separate emails for each post.
TO STOP DIGEST AND GO BACK TO NORMAL EMAIL:
Send an email to wadnetpost-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unset digest" in the subject line. Leave
the body of the email blank. You will get a confirmation showing "unset digest" and "Flag
successfully set". And you'll go back to receiving normal emails from WADNet Post.
TO UNSUBSCRIBE from the WADNet Post, send an email to
wadnetpost-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field.
