DESCRIPTION AS AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL
This just in from good friend of all things related to captioning and
description, Helen Hoffner:
Dear Mary,
Recently two Holy Family University colleagues and I wrote an article
for "The Reading Teacher" and lesson plan for the International Reading
Association's read•write•think Web site on using described films to
improve children's reading and writing ability. We would like to share
them with you.
Best wishes.

Robert Downey Jr. stars as Tony Stark, a man who becomes a superhero
after a near-death incident, in this big-budget Marvel Comics adaptation.
Made of Honor from Sony Pictures (May 2) (cc dvs)
For Tom (Patrick Dempsey), life is good: he's sexy, successful, has
great luck with the ladies, and knows he can always rely on Hannah
(Michelle Monaghan), his delightful best friend and the one constant in
his life. It's the perfect setup until Hannah goes overseas to Scotland
on a six-week business trip... and Tom is stunned to realize how empty
his life is without her. He resolves that when she gets back, he'll ask
Hannah to marry him – but is floored when he learns that she has become
engaged to a handsome and wealthy Scotsman and plans to move overseas.
When Hannah asks Tom to be her "maid" of honor, he reluctantly agrees to
fill the role... but only so he can attempt to woo Hannah and stop the
wedding before it's too late.
Speed Racer from Warner Bros. Pictures (May 9) (cc dvs)
After the success of the films in the Matrix series, the Wachowski
Brothers return to the director's chair with this adaptation of the
classic cartoon. Into the Wild's Emile Hirsch jumps into the Mach 5 car
as Speed Racer, while John Goodman and Susan Sarandon play his parents.
Christina Ricci costars as Speed's girlfriend Trixie, and Matthew Fox
(LOST) is Racer X, his biggest competitor.
What Happens in Vegas from Twentieth Century Fox (May 9) (cc dvs)
Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher star as strangers who unwittingly end up
as bride and groom in this comedy. When one of them strikes it rich
after playing the other person's coin, the stakes are suddenly much
higher. But all's fair in love and war--and Las Vegas--as each of them
tries to get the money.
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian from Buena Vista Pictures (May 16)
(cc dvs)
The characters of C.S. Lewis's timeless fantasy come to life once again
in this newest installment of the "Chronicles of Narnia" series, in
which the Pevensie siblings are magically transported back from England
to the world of Narnia, where a thrilling, perilous new adventure and an
even greater test of their faith and courage awaits them.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from Paramount
Pictures* (May 22) (cc description)
Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, and Karen Allen are all back for the
much-anticipated fourth installment in the Indiana Jones series. For
this adventure, they're joined by an all-star cast that includes Ray
Winstone, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent.
Kung Fu Panda from Paramount Pictures* (Jun 6) (cc description)
Kung Fu Panda features Jack Black as Po the Panda, a lowly waiter in a
noodle restaurant, who is a kung fu fanatic but whose shape doesn't
exactly lend itself to kung fu fighting. In fact, Po's defining
characteristic appears to be that he is the laziest of all the animals
in ancient China. That's a problem because powerful enemies are at the
gates, and all hopes have been pinned on a prophesy naming Po as the
"Chosen One" to save the day. A group of martial arts masters are going
to need a black belt in patience if they are going to turn this slacker
panda into a kung fu fighter before it's too late.
You Don't Mess with the Zohan from Sony Pictures (Jun 6) (cc dvs)
In You Don't Mess With the Zohan, a comedy from screenwriters Judd
Apatow (Knocked Up), Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog), and
Adam Sandler, Sandler stars as Zohan, an Israeli commando who fakes his
own death in order to pursue his dream to become a hairstylist in New York.
* WGBH has developed a conversion process to enable select Paramount and
DreamWorks films to be available via Rear Window Captioning systems.
Some of these titles will also be available with descriptions. The
latter will be designated "description" vs. DVS in our Updates to
indicate availability of that feature, though WGBH did not create those
descriptions.
