[VISTA] Re: New Microsoft Beta Download Center

Here are my thoughts on Silverlight and such things.  A)  I agree it is
cool!  B)

Back in the day, we had dumb terminals.  We sat at green screens and entered
commands to a mainframe which were echoed onto our monitors and we saw the
results of them.  This was fine for a while, but in order to have a better
and experience and more functionality, we moved onto having a local computer
with an operating system.  We started running more and more things on our
desktops and fewer and fewer things on servers.  This was great for
usability, but a PITA to manage and maintain, not to mention how much of a
PITA it is to access your data when it's on a desktop machine.  So, this has
lead us into increasing popularity in web apps, which is just the modern day
version of the dumb terminal.  But, we need more functionality, so in comes
Flash, Javascript, ActiveX controls, Silverlight, and other such
enhancements.  Eventually, the taskbar will be replaced by the tabs in your
browser.  The browser will become as complicated and as cumbersome to setup
and maintain as today's operating systems.  And then someone will create a
browser that runs in the browser that is that day's version of the green
screen.  And the cycle will just keep continuing until we realize that
client-server is not a solution, it's a conflict.  And swaying the bias back
and forth between the two just leaves things in an annoying flux.

Maybe it is just you... maybe you are just really only virtually here. One
of those twilight zone type of thingies. It must of detected virtual PC or
Server running on your system or something.  Silverlight is pretty cool
though.
