[visionegg] Re: visionegg Digest V3 #44

Hi All,

I just noticed this message and I can comment on the use of 10-bit ATI Radeon cards from the point of view of a psychtoolbox user (I will say I've played around with the visionegg and quite like it).

I was using the Radeon (9000) to do 10-bit graphics (we've since changed to the Bits++, which are MUCH better imho) on a PowerMac g4 running Matlab 5.2.2 and all under system 9. All the tests for "ten-bitted-ness) checked out. It can be done, but I'm not sure where ATI is at with their PC/Mac OS X drivers.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Best,

Chris

Hi Andrew,

Well, I got this not-so-useful reply from ATI:

Regarding 10-bit frame buffer support.

The RADEON 9800 products all offer 10-bit frame buffer support. In

Relations >department. Please visit their portion of the ATI website at

ATI seem to lump 10-bit frame buffer support under the term "Smartshader":

http://ati.com/companyinfo/glossary/includes/list.html#smartshader

From what I can tell, "Smartshader" has been supported in both D3D and
OpenGL since the release of ATI's Catalyst 3.8 drivers:

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/catalyst_38_release_notes.html#168664

This occurred back in Oct. 2003:

http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/press/2003/4694.html

less than a year ago. So, perhaps the 10 bit framebuffers are now
supported in the OpenGL drivers. Either way, we're about to buy the
card. We'll give it a try and report what we find.

Hello,

There's some mention of 10-bit framebuffer support on the website.
We're
thinking of getting the ATI Radeon 9800, which claims to have both 10
bit DACs and 10 bit framebuffers, and using this with Vision Egg. Does
anyone have any experience with this? Can we expect to get 2^10 shades
of grey, or are there still OpenGL driver problems as mentioned on the
site?

I've tried and failed to get the 10 bit framebuffers to work in Windows
using OpenGL on both the Radeon 9800 Pro and the Matrox Parhelia. This
was over a year ago now, though, so times may have changed. There was a
thread about this on the psychtoolbox list with myself and Jon Peirce,
among others, sometime last year, if you want to read further.

Cheers!
Andrew
