Actually, on the first parallel ports, they were the only
lines accepting input (to check the status of the printer): the
bits from the data register were meant to be *sent* to the printer.
In some BIOSes, you have the option of setting the parallel port to
"unidirectional" to have this configuration.
This is why it is safer to use the status bits than the data bits to
receive input.
