Does the flicker occur in the original version of any of Andrew's sample
programs?

I remember having a "flicker" issue in a moving grating I set up that seemed
RAM-dependent - an older system with 512 MB couldn't display it correctly
(flicker!), but upgrading to 1 GB of RAM (almost completely) fixed the
problem.  It would be worth trying to run your program on a different system
(same OS) with different RAM, video card, processor, etc., just to see if it
gets better/worse.
