(Eek, indexed color! I _wrote_ the Vision Egg partly to get away from
that! :)
pygame has indexed color modes (see the flames_pygame and
flames_visionegg demos). Maybe this will work for you?
Also, I think OpenGL supports indexed color modes (although it seems
you'd be throwing away 90% of the power...), but I've never tried it.
