Thanks Andrew. Yeah, I know about that monitor (I think you meant to
write HM204DT). 22" is a bit big for us. We might end up having to go
that route, although I've been told that Iiyama is discontinuing their
CRTs (or at least the HM903DT) in favour of LCDs.

I've learned all I know about "cloned monitors" from your email, and I
therefore cannot add anything (I do agree with your analysis, though).
To suggest a potentially easy but more expensive solution, it appears
the Iiyama HM904DT is also capable of 800x600@200hz. Apparently
newegg.com carries them for US$549, but is currently out of stock
(according to their website, they are expected in stock on Monday):
