Hi Joe and all,
Happy new year. You may find these 3 you tube videos of interest. They are a
young guy named Chase who is blind describing and demonstrating the Wii and how
a blind person may be able to use it. There are 3 videos, the first 2 go
through the device itself and the hardware etc. and the third video is of Chase
playing Wii Fit Tennis on the device. The first 2 videos start with an
introduction from him which is the same in both videos just in case you think
you've hit the same link twice. I can tell you from the you tube comments Chase
has left that he does not have any useful vision. He has light perception level
of vision, and some shadows. Everything he does to run the Wii is done by using
sounds. I think they are interesting videos.
This is the first link describing the console.

This is the second video describing the remote control.

This is the third video demonstrating Wii Fit Tennis.

All the best,
Francis.

Subject: [vip_students] wii experience
hello friends, and a happy new year to all on the list, perhaps i might get
my legs slapped for this message, but it is about technology, and apologies if
the message is somewhat long, over the christmas period i had my first
experience with wii, to make a long story short, we had a christmas party at my
son's house, he has two children, one aged ten and a little genius aged five,
he is a computer wiz kid he was given a wii play station for christmas, this
included a games section, during dinner he was telling me all about these
wonderful games that one can play with wii, so after dinner we headed for the
playroom, he explained to me about the games, "you couldn't play tennis
granddad, because you can't see the ball bouncing but you could play golf,",,
he then proceeded to explain to me about how the golf was set up, you have a
piece of equipment like a remote control that is the golf club, when the screen
is set up for golf you swing the remote and bring it through, you can
hear the club hitting the ball, and it is here that you need sighted
assistance, to tell you where the ball is situated, after a while ai grasped
the idea, and eight of us started a golf tournament, putting on the green
requires a little skill, but i finished up fifth of eight in the tournament,
but then we turned to ten pin bowling, fantastic, again using the remote as a
bowling ball, [you don't let go of it when you bowl] you can hear the ball
rolling down the lane, and hitting the skittles, there are ten skittles, and
once again it's here you need sighted assistance to tell you how many skittles
are left standing, my grandson then explained to me how you can bowl the ball
down the right or left side of the lane, there arrow keys at the top of the
remote, if you want to knock the left skittle down you press the left arrow
wait for it, i finished second of eight in the bowling tournament, and it was
fantastic to be able to join in the games with the rest of the sighted p
layers now i am interested in taking a look at the wii fit, it's a keep fit
programme and i want to see if it's blind friendly i need to get rid of some
excess weight provided by mince pies, christmas pudding, chocolates etc, but
this wii experience was a great bit of fun, has anyone on the list had any
experience of it, sorry for the long narative, take care, travel safely, joe.
