Hi Paul, I find the same thing happening sporadically with the search box in google. Tab seens to bring in the focus whereas enter or space doesn't even though you get the sound of entering a edit box. However if I uparrowed then used the "Tab key" to move onto the desired link followed by enter key it would open up. Not sure if this is what you are experiencing but you might give it a try.
