Sounds like a neat tool for sure. I use a laptop harddrive which is
contained within a special case for housing laptop drives and is also
powered via the USB ports.
I only have a 160 Gig here at home, yours sounds really good, what kind

Hi Paul i have just got a 400 gig external hard drive. The beauty of
this one it is no bigger than a regular passport. In fact it is called a
passport hard drive. The one i got is a 400 gig. I got it in scotland but
you can get them in pc world for various sizes. Another good advantage
with
the passport hard drive you don't need to plug it into the wall. You plug
it
in to the usb connection on your pc the same as a flash drive. You can get
a
hard case for the drive so you can bring it withyou. If you want any more

I would suggest strongly that you or anyone else who cares about

computer work, personal files, music collections etc get an external drive
and create a backup plan. I recently read in the Lidl catalogue where they
had a "terrabyte external drive" for euros 80. This is a massive size of
storage space and I would suggest that you watch out for it in future
either
in Lidl or Aldle.

Thank you for all that info but it leads me to a few more questions
now!
Am I right in saying then, that WinZip is not a saving space facility
but rather a backup facility if the original file remains?
I have located my zipped files since my last email and unzipped them
in order to download the new programme you recommended and although I've
gone through the process of unzipping, they still look like zipped files
to
me. Why is this?
I suppose my real question is if deleted the original as in the file
that remained to save space, what would happen?.
I have a lot of music and photographs on my pc which are the main
culprits I know for taking up space but I don't suppose it is possible to
zip these. Maybe the external hard drive is the answer to my problems.
Is it a big device?

Yes Edel, that's correct. The original files will remain where they
are located and the zipped up files will basically be wherever you
instructed the zip software to store them when converted into the zip
format.
It sounds like you didn't tell where to locate the new zipped up
files and WinZip just used its default location.

Zipped up files is a pretty good idea but on one or two occasions
in
the past when I came back to a zipped up file I had and needed something
out of it, it failed to work correctly and I lost my files. I do stress
this
doesn't often happen but if you are thinking of using this for back up
purposes, I would still refer to the kind of backup plan I wrote to the
list
earlier today and see how it might suit your needs.
If you really want to zip up your files I would recommend a great
free zip software called "7-zip" and you can download it from the below
link. When you right click on any files or folders or have first selected
a
group of files and or folders, just right click and you will see that
there
is a 7 zip sub menu in there. You can right arrow in here and choose to
zip
up what you have selected. At this point it will prompt you to give it a
place to locate the zipped up files, just click on browse and make your
choice of location. Next, there will be a kind of save as file type box
with
the format of "7Z" in it, change this to zip, you only have to do this
one,
any other time you create a zip file it will have remained at the format
of". zip". Just click on okay and the process will begin. Much simpler I
think than WinZip.
