Hi all. I've been following this thread with great interest as recently I have also been trying to scan and read an image file. I've found Kurzweil to be the best method and Aedan's last suggestion to copy the file to Kurzweil and then open it through the application menu as the simplest and most efficient. In my case, the result is pretty messy but at least the content of the file is accessible, if in a rather scattered form. Hope you're beating the virus Aedan, get well soon. Kur will convert it and read it out.
