hi Joan-Anne I am wondering if you ever resoved your problem re contacts. In
case not please try this also.
Go to the menu, Tools, Settings, General, Display, then down to Screen
Rotation. You will probably find this is set to auto. Press the square joypad
to change it, and turn it off. Back out of the settings.
Note on my N96 I had to go from General to Profiles to display but I am sure
you will be able to work around this on your particular model of phone
