[vip_students] Re: A computer with a built in screenreader up dated.

Hi Paul and everyone else,

Really interesting stuff in the below article.

I had a brief look at the Mac Mini that Paul mentions but didn't really have
the time to delve into the applications properly.

Anyway, for anyone who might be interested, the link below will take you to
a really good presentation from this year's CSUN conference, where three
operating systems, Windows, Linux and Mac, were tested against each other
using assistive technology.

It does go on a bit so grab yourself a cup of tea, glass of milk or even
something a little stronger if you like and sit back and enjoy. Oh yes, now
for that link, which is, http://dcnightout.com/?p=137

Regards,

Stuart.

Hi Joan Ann,

Yes, it does have limitations when it comes to really complex work within
word documents spread sheets etc and without people fully versed in how to
use both voice over and the applications on the mac then there is no way we
could support it until we start using it more in an experimental fashion
among ourselves. The general feel among blind people especially those
living in America is that voice over is sufficient for their needs as it is
for anyone who isn't in a tight working environment where certain tasks are
required of them and that they need certain skills and articulation when it
comes to using particular software packages such as Microsoft Office which
isn't yet, "accessible" with the Mac. For basic home use then yes, it might
be okay but right now
Apart from a little time I spent using it last year I have no more
experience than just that. If people wish to purchase the Apple Mac I
wouldn't discourage it as it is their right but its a new learning curve
however it would be really exciting and I personally felt it very rewarding
when spent that small amount of time working on the Mac mini model they had
out a couple of years ago now.
I feel that Apple are doing their best to lead the way by example so lets
hope they keep rocking along.

Paul.
