DuBois Regional Medical Center is hosting an American Lung Association “Freedom from Smoking” class to teach people how to stop smoking starting Sept. 7.  Trained facilitators help participants stop tobacco use through eight classes. Attend the first one to see if it is right for you.  The class starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Central Resource Center at DRMC’s west campus. It is the former Central Christian High School building.  Many medications can now help with smoking cessation. These medications are a component of the program. Financial aid for the medications is available for those who qualify.  For more information or to register, call DRMC at 375-3575 or 372-2966. The Chamber’s Birdies to Bogies Ladies Golf Tournament is looking for your promo pieces to present to the women playing in this tournament.  We give everyone “Ditty Bags” with a variety of opportunities inside. Newly Added Today:

 

Hospital Avenue Project Update for Week of Sept. 6 - The following information is an update for PennDOT’s Hospital Avenue/Dixon Avenue realignment project in DuBois for the week of Sept. 6. All work is weather dependent.

·         No work will be performed on Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

·         The contractor will be installing waterline on South Main Street between Grove Avenue and Dixon Avenue.

·         The contractor will be excavating and grading South Main Street between Grove Avenue and Dixon Avenue in preparation for paving. This work will be in the lane that is currently closed and will not affect traffic. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on South Main Street.

·         Motorists are advised to watch for slow moving and stopped vehicles through the entire work zone

The overall project will re-align Hospital Avenue with Dixon Avenue.  Work includes roadway widening, new traffic signals, and improved access to DRMC. The job is scheduled to run through late November of this year.

 

There will be a ribbon cutting Tuesday, September 7th for the area’s newest business – Airgas is opening their doors at the former car wash building on Beaver Drive.  Stop in and meet the staff and welcome them to DuBois!

 

The DuBois Chamber and DuBois Business College are accepting students in the Greater DuBois Leadership Institute for the 2010-2011 session.  The students learn about local, county and state government; tourism and industry; and visit with local entrepreneurs and corporate CEOs.  One session is held each month from September through May with graduation held in June.  This program is for those who are new to the area, those being moved into a new position in your company or those seeking knowledge about the area to become one of our next leaders.  Please contact the DuBois Chamber to register:  dacc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The DuBois Area Historical Society will hold its Fourth Annual Open House, Saturday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m. -3 p.m. at the E.D. Reitz Museum, 28 W. Long Ave., DuBois. The open house is free and open to the public.  “The Society wants to share what we have developed in DuBois,” said Society President Evo Facchine. “The museum exhibits thousands of items related to local history.”  The open house will include guided tours of the facilities including the genealogical library. Because of the tours genealogical research cannot be conducted during the open house but arrangements can be made to return at a later time for help in finding family information.  “This is an excellent chance for everyone in the community to see what the Society owns and what the Society is currently doing,” said Facchine. “This is our history and the Society wants all to appreciate it, learn from it, and enjoy it.  The DuBois Area Historical Society will host the Third Annual Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk on October 16th. The Walk will begin at 6 p.m. and leave every 20 minutes from the Hiller Building on the Penn State DuBois Campus, the original property of DuBois patriarch John DuBois. On the walk, “Spirits” of DuBois’ history will speak to the tours. The walk topics are suitable for all ages. Admission for the tour is $5 for adults and $3 for students, with children sixth grade and younger free if accompanied by an adult.  Then on Nov. 13th the Fourth Annual DuBois Area Historical Society luncheon will take place at noon at the DuBois Diner, featuring guest speaker, Barb Clark, “Hidden Messages of Quilts.” Further details will be announced at a later date.

 

City Tobacco & Lottery will host a Gentlemen’s Night on Saturday, September 17th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at their location in the DuBois Area Plaza on the Beeline Highway.

Haven House Shelter will present their annual fundraiser “Performing Hearts” at the DuBois Are Middle School on Friday, October 8th at 7pm.  This is an important event in the efforts to allow the shelter to provide help and assistance to the thousands who have used the facility.  Tickets are $12 and available at the Greater DuBois Chamber, Rosie’s Book Shoppe, or S&T Bank on the Boulevard.

 

The final Downtown Block Party for the season is scheduled for Friday Oct. 8th from 5-8pm - Fall into DuBois; Fire trucks will be on display (Firemen's Week), food of the season, bobbing for apples, Farmer's Market, Polka Band and demo, live band TBA! This Block Party is the last in the series and kicks off a whole weekend of downtown business shopping specials, sidewalk sales and other promotions.

 

AARP and the Greater DuBois Chamber announce a Candidates Forum for Saturday morning, October 23rd from 8:30am to noon.  The location will be the meeting room of Lakeside United Methodist Church at 420 First Street, beside Tannery Dam.  First on the agenda will be the candidates for Representative, Matt Gabler and Frank Straub.  Then Congressman Glenn GT Thompson will meet his challenger Michael Pipe.  Registration, coffee and donuts begins at 8:30 am with questions at 9:00am.  Advance registration can be made by emailing the chamber at dacc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or calling 371-5010.

DuBois Kiwanis Club hosts Community Days at Hoss’s on Monday, September 13th.  Twenty percent (20%) of the proceeds benefit the Kiwanis Smoke Alarm Fund – a working smoke alarm is provided to the family of every newborn at DRMC.  Support this life-Saving Project!

 

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) asks you to join them for their September 2010 meeting!  The meeting will be on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at  The DuBois Diner  located at W. The Friends of  the Library will present “My Uncle Charlie Did What?!!” Genealogical Resources at the DuBois Public Library. Former library director Leah Green will introduce participants to the hobby of genealogy, suggesting ways to begin exploring family history and featuring resources available at the library. The program will be presented on Monday September 20 from 10:30 until 11:30 A.M. and repeated from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M. in the library program room.  Pre-registration is requested and may be completed by contacting the library at 371-5930 by September 14.

Can You Bring a Vehicle to Touch A Truck Day?  This special event for children is scheduled for Saturday, October 2nd  in the parking lot of the DuBois Mall nearest the Hampton Inn.  Glenn O.
