Hi, Mark, Most of us who do not use Sky have no access to audio description.Saying that this shows there is no interest is the same as the restaurant owner saying that they won't install a ramp up the large step at the entrance because nobody with a wheelchair ever comes in ... it's one of those old Catch 22 situations.
Take Care, Gerry Ellis If you don't know where you're going, How will you know when you get there?----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Magennis" <Mark.magennis@xxxxxxx>

If you watch any audio described television and would be able to take part in this research, please consider it. I've only had a few responses and the danger is that the research company will report back to the Broadcasting Commission that there is very little interest in audio description. This will be used to justify not having any in future! It is very important that we can demonstrate a need for it and participation in this research is a good way of doing that. Thanks for taking the time to read this and sorry for bothering those of you who have no access to audio description. Here are the details again. NCBI is looking for paid participants in Dublin and Galway to take part in research on audio description. This is open to people who regularly watch audio described television programmes, for example through Sky. It will involve a telephone interview and participation in a focus group. Participants will be paid €60. Background and details: The quotas for audio description on Irish television are under review. At the moment, only RTÉ is required to provide any audio description and that only amounts to 1% of programmes on RTÉ One and RTÉ Two. NCBI, in partnership with other organisations through the TV Access campaign, is calling for very large increases in audio description quotas across all Irish channels, plus the introduction of minimum quality standards. The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) is carrying out research into audio description before making its decisions on the new quotas and standards. BCI has commissioned OCS Consulting to carry out interviews and focus groups with audio description users. NCBI has agreed to facilitate this work and we are looking to recruit a number of people in Dublin and Galway. Participants will undertake the following two activities: 1. A telephone interview of up to 30 minutes, some time during June at your convenience. 2. A focus group session lasting up to an hour and a quarter at NCBI's offices in Drumcondra or Galway, some time during the first two weeks of July. Participants will be paid €60 on attendance at the focus group session. If you are interested in taking part in this valuable work that will have an impact on the amount of audio description available to Irish television viewers, please email me at mark.magennis@xxxxxxxx Thanks, Mark Magennis NCBI CFIT and TV Access ******************************************************************** NOTICE: The information contained in this email and any attachments is confidential and may be privileged.
