Hi Damien,
Ok, I've downloaded one of the flyers and I reckon the problem is that
embedded graphics are being used, and no alt text is used with the graphics,
so jaws sees nothing.
Like the web, if you don't put alt text on graphics in word documents,
jaws won't see them at all.
To see if your problem is related to embedded graphics, open the
template and then hit control + jawskey + shift + g.
This should bring up a list of the embedded graphics on the page.
If it doesn't, then maybe your problem is not related to this.
I've found a bit of a hack for converting the graphics to text ....
but I don't know if this messes up the template, so it mightn't be any use
for you.
Again, open the template.
Using the jaws cursor you should be able to find the text in the graphic
on the page.
Hit the left mouse button, (the slash key on the number pad) to
highlight the text.
Then click the right mouse button (* key on number pad), and a context menu
should appear.
select translate.
Then select entire document and choose text.
Word will then try and open a website to translate the document into
another language. You don't really want this, but a side effect seems to be
that the graphics in your template is now text which jaws can read.
There is probably an easier way of doing this, but I'm no expert in word!
I know this sounds conviluted, and as I say if the template layout is
messed up it won't even solve your problem, but at least you will have the
text.
Regards,
Tim

Hi Tim.
Thanks for this. No They're not forms. They are content controles. The
templates I'm talking about are ones I've downloaded from the microsoft
website. They are for flyers. the idea is that they are already designed and
all you do is to put in your information. The formatting and overall style of
the template is retained.
Damien.

Hi Damien,
Does the word template contain a form?
If so, it really depends on how the form was created. There are
guidelines for creating accessible word forms.
I would suggest looking at the microsoft word section in the
jaws online help. Specifically look at the helpful hints for word section,
where you will find info on navigating word forms.

Subject: [vicsireland] JAWS 8 and Templates.
Hello everyone.
I wonder if anyone can help. I've sent this query to the jaws light
user group and had no response so thought I'd try vics members. Please accept
my apologies if this isn't the kind of thing vics Ireland is for but, I'm
getting desperate.
This isn't really a specific question, so, I apologise in advance if
I'm sounding vague.
I'm currently working through a desktop publishing module on my
computer course and am trying to use JAWS 8 with templates downloaded from the
Microsoft
website into ms word 2007. Once downloaded in order to enter
information I have to click into place views on each template. and then enter
specific information.
However, Jaws doesn't read the downloaded template and I can't seem to
access the areas of the template that require information. Has anyone had any
experience
of using jaws and templates downloaded from the Microsoft website and
if so, can anyone advise me on the best way forward.
Thanks in advance.
Damien O'Connor.
