[vicsireland] Re: Handwriting re Computers

Hi Tony,

You are forgetting that the handwriting scanned in by a standard scanning
pacakge is just a picture. It isn't actually text which the screen
reader can access. So, no, I don't believe a screen reader could access
this type of material.

Of course, if somebody knows otherwise I stand corrected.

Tim

Hi Eamonn & Tim,

Nice one!

So if the handwriting is legible or otherwise on the screen wonder if then
could a screen reader manage to read such!

Any further contributions on this subject, very much appreciated!

There are many wise and informed Vics listers!

Let's hear more on this.
Thanks

Tony

Hi Tony and Tim,

I imagine where handwriting is necessary, (say in a census form,) that the
forms, including the handwriting, are scanned.

Remember, while screen reading software won't be able to read the
handwriting, someone sighted will still be able to read it on the screen.

Although I can't read it, I'm told that the 1911 census for Dublin is quite
legible.

Regards,

Eamonn

Hi Tony,

If the CVs were printed, then I would imagine they would be scanned in,
using standard desk top scanning software.

However, I think the majority of job applications are done online these
days, and CVs would be submitted either as email or digital documents.

Tim

Hi All,

I am just wondering of something I came across on another list where they
were discussing of handwriting and whether the computer software could read
such!

Now I think that say Kurzweil or any other software cannot read handwriting
but here's my question!

With all forms, CV's and so on where one would write in (perhaps in
"printing") then what happens to those documents on arrival?

Do they then have to be inputted manually in to a computer?

Must be lots of work for lots of people!

Wonder if there is something that we as Vips (Vics) are missing out on here?

Is it at at all possible for a computer to read handwriting, well written of
course?

Just curious.

Cheers
Tony
