When I got the iPhone in February 2011, I was able to read Google Docs
well with Voiceover, but by this stage I was finding it difficult to

project, and I started using NVDA around then. Given the total
accessibility of Word + Dropbox combination, I haven't used Google

In The Dropbox app used to be totally accessible, but in phased
upgrades in 2013, it gradually made .doc and .docx documents
more-or-less inaccessible using Voiceover (on iPhone anyway). I
contacted Dropbox about this, and they even called me up one day to
talk about it...nothing happened. I contacted them six months to a
year later, but this time got no response at all.
I still use Dropbox for almost all my Cloud document editing work, and
I can rely on the changes having been sent immediately on saving.
Now, since I needed to be able to read Word documents on the move, I
installed Google Drive on my computers and iPhone (app). Voiceover
reads .doc and .docx documents perfectly in Google Drive (on iPhone
anyway). It's a pity to have to remember to transfer everything
across from Dropbox though, since I do all my editing in Dropbox. I
do all my editing in Dropbox because I can't rely on Google Drive
sending the latest Save or update of the document in time...it's hit
and miss, and I find it a great contrast to Dropbox efficiency.
There is another problem with Google Drive...I find, anyway. With
Dropbox, when you delete a file, it is deleted (or at least moved)
from the the same folder in the main online storage area. In 2014
Google was telling by gmail that I had exceded my storage capacity in
the Google system. I didn't understand this, since on my computer, I
had only a tiny amount of data, and my gmail wasn't using up much
either.
I contacted Google (somehow, because they're difficult to access when
using a screen-reader in my experience), and someone from Google
called me back and explained that you don't just have to delete things
from the Google Drive installed on your computer, but that you
actually have to make sure they're deleted (separately) in the cloud
itself.
Since I find the online/cloud part of Google Drive difficult to use
with a screen-reader, this is a real off-putter. It would be better
if it could sync as efficiently and as universally as Dropbox.

Thanks for the response. My experience is similar on Mac. I’ve been able to
manage documents themselves on the Mac in much the same way as Dropbox, but
my real issue is when trying to collaborate on documents and spreadsheets
with other people, as they are generally Google docs.
On the website, VoiceOver even read some screen-reader tips but the commands
mentioned don’t seem to do anything. I can’t make head nor tail of it.
The iOS apps are somewhat usable but far from a great experience.
So yeah it would be good to hear from any people using it successfully.
PS I look forward to chatting to you about NVDA on Saturday. At work I use
Windows and use NVDA 90% of the time as I actually prefer it to Jaws, but
find I still need Jaws for a few tasks.
