Thanks Nicky,

That info sounds very positive and very promising indeed!

Looking forward to hearing.

Good luck with doing that.

Tony, we do hope to have the presentations uploaded in probably an edited
form yes but the details of that haven't been worked out yet.

  Cheers, Nicky.

      Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback re Galway, it's much appreciated.

There were a few logistical issues surrounding Internet connectivity in
the venue, so perhaps the quality of the connection wasn't as good as it
might've been.

Still, given that it was our first attempt, I'm sure you'll agree that it
wasn't a bad effort. A huge thanks to Stuart Lawler for making it happen.

As Joan Ann has already said, we were delighted with the turnout. Many
thanks to all of you who attended, both virtually and in person.

I'd also like to welcome all the new members to the mailing list. Great
to meet you on Saturday, I hope you found the day useful.

      Onwards and upwards...

      Ciaran

This is very interesting technology working both ways. I know th

Edat generator buoys are being tested off the east coast of the 'States
using wave nmovement to generate electricity. As far as I know they
are
only running their own lights at the moment, but the potential is
enormous.
The display you describe should make tactile maps diagrams, computer
powered, very accessible too. How about feely signs that only go
into
relief at the presence of a vip identifier?

Hi to all who managed to attend the Vics Day either virtually or in
the flesh! Just wanted to say that I had a great day and that not the
least of it was meeting up with other Vics members.

One thing I did notice though, and I haven't listened to the
podcast (if there is one) was the universal groan when prices were
mentioned for the various bits of new adaptive technology. There
seems to be an ever widening gap twixt the cost and our
ability/willingness to pay! Maybe I am wrong here, but it seems clear
to me that we should look, more and more, to the mainstream with work
arounds for our tech solutions. So, here is something to watch: for
those of us who like to use braille displays, but are sometimes
frustrated by both their limitations and exorbitant prices, there is
something that has been around, in the development stage, for quite
some time now, but which is very nearly ready for production, which
are called EAP displays. Now, don't quote me on this, because I would
need to check it out on Google, EAP stands for Electro Actuated
Polimers. In brief, these are sheets of thin, rubberised, paper,
potentially of any size, but for our purposes, say, average, large,
braille paper size, which can bluetooth to a PC/PDA/Phone/what every
you want, and can show a full page of refreshable braille. They aren't
exactly mechanical, as are our present ones, can be easily mass
produced and could/should be extremely cheap!!! They may not be as
durable as our current displays, but, because they should be pounds
rather than thousands of pounds, could easily be replaced.

Now, does this sound like adaptive tech rather than mainstream,
well, no! You see these EAP displays are being developed for the
mainstream and the Braille functionality is only one application, I
believe thay can also be visual displays, and this is why I am so
        excited about them!

If anyone is interested, there is going to be a conference, I
think in California, on the 9th of March, which might be streamed. If
you google "eapad conference march braille" you should find more info.
As I say, it isn't quite there yet, but I believe that the first, up
and running, one of these displays will be demonstrated at that
        conference!

            Happy Googling!
Sandy and her four legged dustbin!
