BBC iPlayer going global This item may be of interest to some on the list Tony. Stephen Graves - Mon, 08/11/2010 - 4:41pm The BBC iPlayer is set to go global, with the news that the BBC Trust has given the green light to an international version of the video-on-demand service. The BBC Trust has yet to officially announce the global iPlayer, but BBC Worldwide chief executive John Smith has revealed that an international version of the video-on-demand catch-up service will go online in 2011. The iPlayer is currently restricted to UK users, but the BBC and its commercial arm BBC Worldwide are understandably keen to provide a legitimate alternative to illegal downloads of their shows. With the increasing popularity of shows like Top Gear, Sherlock and Doctor Who overseas, BBC Worldwide also wants to exploit the commercial potential of BBC brands; the international iPlayer would likely include paid-for downloads or advertising embedded in programmes. Smith told the Telegraph <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelec oms/digital-media/8114911/BBC-aims-to-gain-from-global-iPlayer.html> that, "Not only will that mean international fans of, for example, Doctor Who can get their fix legitimately, but it has the potential of opening up a new revenue stream for the entire UK production industry."
