Hi James,

I do all of my track-splitting manually within goldwave. At least that way,
you can keep total control of where the tracks divide.

So, say I have a ten-minute chung of recorded sound, which I want to divide
at a mid point. I skip through the file until I'm close to the point at
which I want to split the track. I listen until I hear that I'm at the
precise cut-off point I want. Left bracket (the one next to the P) pressed
at that point will select from that moment till the end of the file. Cut to
clipboard in the usual way (control + X. Save what's left as part 1. Delete,
then control+C to copy the second half of the original sound file back into
Goldwave, and save it as part two. You will have divided the original track
into two separate files, splitting at precisely the point you heard that the
split should be. When listening to the original full-length file, you can
slow the playback down
Using shift+J once or twice if this helps you to locate your cut-off point
more exactly. Then shift+K to play back at normal speed.

If you don't get it right first time, you can always do control+z and re-do
until you're satisfied with the results, provided you don't save either of
the divided files until you are 100% satisfied you'll end up with the
results you want to hear.

The bane of my life are those vinyl albums where two tracks you want to
separate just overlap. Using Stevie Wonder albums asexamples, you can get a
perfect split between Superstition and Big Brother on Talking Book, because
the tracks are back to back. You'd have problems achieving the same result
with Living For The City and Golden Lady on Innervisions, because the last
note of one overlaps the first note of the other. In that instance, I'd
probably save the two tracks as a pair, rather than break up a messy segue.
.

Best,
Clive

Hi James,

I was just about to recommend Goldwave as an affordable and powerful
solution for you.  Clive Lever, also on this list, did a great presentation
for BCAB about transferring and archiving vinyl and tape.
if you're a member you may have access to the notes, and Clive may also
chime in with pointers.

I haven't tried any of the software that claims to split tracks
automatically but I wouldn't trust it to divide material in the correct
places for listening, and you can do a lot of cleaning up as well as editing
with Goldwave.

HTH,

Best,

Peter

Hi John,

Thank you, that is very useful. I hadn't thought about total Recorder but
have heard good reports of it. I use Goldwave for basic audio editing on my
PC. Obviously it can do so much more than that, but I haven't had cause or
time to delve further.

Cheers, James

Hi james

Assuming you have a turntable, right? I would probably just record the
material using Total Recorder which I actually spent money on, on my
Windows 7 laptop. It's pretty good in terms of accessibility and can
record from various sources. I don't remember whether it can do clever
things such as automatically splitting your recording into different
files for each track, but if not, that's very easy to do when you've
got the material into the computer. If you want to do all this on the
IPhone, I'm not your man :)

Talk soon, John

Hi,
Has anyone come across software such as https://www.ionaudio.com/ezvc/ ;

mp3, and does anyone have any accessible solutions for this with a screen
reader?
I assume that Audacity can do the same but I never found that particularly
intuitive.
