Has Alex always been good around distracting people or is
this something you've worked on?
LOL, Gosh no! She LOVES people!. To be honest, I have worked on it long and
hard.. At first when she was being socialized as a half grown dog, she was
allowed to greet folks alot. I found that it is better not to allow people to
touch her as her brains fell out.. after a while she realized that soliciting
attention didn't work and stopped asking to greet people. Now, she is allowed
to greet occasionally and handles it much better than when she was younger..I
think maturity helps.. it is also a great and unexpected treat for her and I
will occasionally use it as a reward if it is appropriate.. She is a pest
when out of harness and will walk up to anybody..
One of the things that helps when teaching it is to teach a dog to leave it
to get it or get something even better.... this is the basis of the no mugging
game in the basic lessons.. this is just on a grander scale... so much falls
back on the basics.. those few lessons apply to so many situations!
