Several emoticons can be represented by the artistic use of punctuation
marks. For instance, a  colon followed by a right parenthesis is the
standard representation of a smiley.  Change the parenthesis to an upper
case “D,”  and you get a big grin.  A less than sign , a colon, followed by
a vertical bar is grim anger.  A smiley with a  semicolon instead of a colon
is a wink, usually meant for sarcasm.  There are hundreds of these emoticons
and they are easily represented in braille, but it helps to know what these
characters look like to sighted people in order to catch their meaning.

 

Sadly, the use of emoticons has reached a somewhat fashionable or cult-like
status and some purely graphical emoticons have entered into the genre, and
these are purely visual graphical symbols, and cannot be presented in
braille as far as I know.

Hi Erin:

                To my knowledge, these are not generally recognizable on a
braille display.  I’m not sure if they can be produced from the Braille
display and have them come out right in print.  Interesting questin.

Hi, everyone,

 

I’m curious about the representation of emoticons in iOS and JAWS with the
Vario Ultra. What governs how they are represented?  I cannot find anything
on the web obvious about the representation of emoticons and what Braille
symbols are used.
