Correct about the usefulness of GPS, of course, and I have a pretty decent
unit that I use on occasion, though I am much more of a map guy, still.
Don't have to worry about dropping the map and all that. I don't normally
take a GPS on a boat, since keeping my balance, using my binocular,
occasionally writing notes and having a snack is about all the challenge I
want on a bouncy boat, especially on a winter trip. Often someone else has a
GPS, and the captain knows where we are, of course (we hope). It is always
helpful when trip leaders state where you are, though in my experience that
usually has been a matter of miles offshore more than anything else (and
typically you aren't leaving the state you started in, and most people could
care less about the county lines).
But in reality, I think the issue here is not so much knowing where we are,
in lat-long terms, but rather if "where we are" when >3 miles offshore
should count in a particular county. I have seen plenty of pelagic birds
that I count on VA, NC et al. lists, but not on any county lists - not yet,
anyway.
