[va_co_birding] Re: County listing in the Chesapeake Bay

Larry et al -

This is a favorite topic of mine. I have been pestering people with it since
the early 80's.

I finally did enough research to convince me that islands 1 & 2 are
considered (for bird listing purposes at least, and appraently for some
others as well) to be in Virginia Beach, and islands 3 & 4 are in
Northampton County. Unfortunately I had been told years ago that "the whole
CBBT" was in Northampton County, but that's patently untrue as I see it now.

For starters, I don't know if you've looked at the U.S. Census county
outline map for Virginia, but it shows a dividing line running up the middle
of the Chesapeake Bay and separating the Eastern Shore counties from the
various counties on the western side of the bay. That's the first reference
I check, and though it's not highly detailed, it's usually enough to provide
an answer, especially together with something like a VA DeLorme. It does
support the separation of the CBBT as I described it above. What I haven't
figured out yet, though I suppose I could with some map time, is what
milepost along the CBBT marks the actual county line. Or better yet, the GPS
coordinates for the place where the CBBT and the county line cross. Of
course we should be driving and not birding when we pass that point, right?

So - what results have you come up with?

Although this list has indeed been mostly silent, I think this is as good a
topic as any to get it going.
