Although certainly not unusual or unexpected, I saw an immature American
Robin in my backyard this morning. It was very close to my window and stuck
around long enough to give me some good looks - a white stripe over the eye,
black speckles on a mostly white chest, with the typical orange breast
beginning around the abdomen. The bird made sounds similar to, but not exactly,
like an adult Robin's call notes, which is what attracted my attention in the
first place - a bird that sounded like a Robin but not quite.
There was an adult male (I'm guessing, due to the color of the head and
chest) walking around, feeding. The immature was a couple of feet behind the
adult and the adult never gave it any food (and Junior didn't beg for any), so
I'm guessing this may not have been his father? Or maybe Daddy was trying to
teach Junior some self-reliance. Thoughts? Junior never ate anything while I
watched and eventually flew off in the same direction as the adult.
