[va-richmond-general] strange sighting on 288/new CCES bird

While driving home on 288 (northbound) this evening (around 5pm), I saw a
WILD TURKEY strutting along the grassy median strip near the Tuckahoe Parkway
(? - the exit just before Broad Street) exit! This, of course, BEGS the
question (If you know me, you HAD to know this was coming)..... Why did the
turkey cross the road??
By the way - if case you really wanted to know - the Turkey was heading
(walking) south. Maybe he had a sign under his wing that said, "South America
or bust!" :-). A hitch-hiking turkey - hmm... that would be a new one. I
thought it was only hummingbirds that hitch-hiked! Before you send me e-mails:
Yes, I know hummingbirds don't really hitch-hike on geese. Everyone knows they
charter private jets!
At Cumberland County ES this morning, there was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
flying around in the Pyrocanthia(?) Trees - the same place where the Waxwings
have been. Maybe he (she? couldn't really tell. The light was bad) was hunting
for leftovers. The Waxwings disappeared for a while but I saw them again last
Thursday, I believe, after about a week or two of not seeing them. There's slim
pickings on the trees now. I suppose it won't be long until they find greener
(redder?) pastures. Maybe they'll help out the Turkey....
One more thing. I've been meaning to ask this for a while. I am grateful
for the positive feedback I have gotten on my Kid's Corner column in The
Thrasher, but it's all been from adults and I write for kids (not that adults
and kids don't sometimes find the same things amusing). So, what I REALLY want
to know is - are there any KIDS reading my articles? Any parents reading them
To their children? Contact me off the listserv at: sc.tanager@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
.Thanks. And watch out for those late-migrating turkeys!! Happy Chanukah/Merry
Christmas/Happy New Year!
