The company I work for is currently building three houses in Dinwiddie. There
are scores of Mockingbirds and Jays hanging around, and the occasional Flicker.
Sometimes, a Thrasher drops in, seeming to mimic the hammer blows with his
smacking. Anyway, today while I was eating lunch, a mockingbird was singing
from some hidden perch. Now, I must admit that I usually don't pay much
attention to their song. Although they are supposed to mimic other birdsong, I
find that most of the time, it's just these pairs or triplets of repeated
whistles. Right in the middle of his routine, seemingly thrown in at random,
this Mockingbird imitates a Peewee. I had to stop chewing. The impersonation
was flawless! I kept on listening, but he never repeated it. Ahh the joys of
birding...the simplest things serve to constantly astound...Irene, is Sun still
on for Belle Isle? That is, if the entire island isn't submerged!
