Hello Birders,
Late this morning I found a WILLET, and RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, at Shirley
Plantation, Charles City County. Other shorebird species present were,
KILLDEER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER,
LEAST SANDPIPER. Also a late male RING-NECKED DUCK was present.
The Willet was present between 10:30 and 11:00 when it flew to the east. The
Phalarope was still present around noon when I left.
The alternate/breeding plumaged Willet showed characteristics of
western/inornata subspecies with diffuse barring on the upper breast and
throat, and relatively plain upper-parts. In fight the black and white
flight feathers were obvious.
The Phalarope appeared to be a female, with richly marked plumage.
I was able to get record shots of both birds. Both birds were visible from
the main dirt road that leads up to the plantation house from route 156. If
you try for these birds please don't stray into the fields.
