I spent the day on the Eastern Shore yesterday, starting at Chincoteague
and working south. Jon Little, who posted to VA-BIRD on Saturday about
his visit to Chincoteague, saw just about everything I did and more, so
I won't dwell on that part of the day, except to say that I had a much
easier time finding the black-billed Great Egret near the flood control
gate on the southern side of the Wildlife Loop, and the number of Least
Sandpipers seems to have bumped up. I did find a good number of
Short-billed Dowitchers along Beach Road and off the Wildlife Loop,
which Jon didn't mention.
My big find of the day was four Whimbrels picking through the mud at
Willis Wharf, which I managed to hit just an hour or so after low tide.
There wasn't a lot of other activity there - a few gulls of expected
types and a couple of Black Skimmers.
