[va-richmond-general] Re: WEVI nest destroyed

Margaret,

That's White-eyed Vireo.
It's usually done like this: It's a;ways 4 letters. With a hypenenated word you use the first letter of each word making up the hyphenated word. For a non-hyphenated word it's the first 2 letters of the word. Therefore WEVI for White-eyed Vireo. For a single word bird name like Killdeer, it's the first 4 letters (KILL). If the bird name is 2 words like Blue Jay, its BLJA. For yellow-bellied Thumb-sucker it's YBTS. (That's a joke!) There are some variations because of the same combination resulting from more than one species. For all the band codes of all the birds in the world, try one of these websites.

If you have bird list software such as Avisys it's really easy to enter data using band codes. You can even make up what you think is the right code and enter it. If there are several possibilities they will be listed and you can choose the right one. Of course banders use them too, as do people doing surveys of birds. Due to the amount of grief I encountered when I used them earlier I don't use them on the Listserv anymore without definition. But it's a good idea for serious birders to at least know how they are derived. I learned about them in Aimee Weldon's bird survey course. I doubt if YBTS would give a good bird, but who knows?
